Relieve sunburn in children with Plouf

by Charles Pfoss on January 27, 2023

Did your child get a sunburn? What should you do?

What is a sunburn?

A sunburn is a burn following a significant exposure to the sun's UVB rays. Before getting a sunburn, there is tanning which is a defense reaction against the sun's aggression. Beyond the tanning, the sunburn destroys thousands of cells of the epidermis.

For an adult, a sunburn is less dangerous than for a child. But why? The skin of a child is much thinner but above all it does not have the defenses that an adult has.

Of course as everyone, the children do not all react the same way to the sun. For example, if your child has dark skinit will still need to be protected from the sun's rays so as not to draw on its solar capital which will remain to him during his life. The latter will not be renewed.

 Can you identify sunburn immediately?

The sunburn is not visible quickly, it appears after a few hours.

There are two types of sunburn:

- The first degree burn. This is redness without blisters.
- Second degree burn. These are water blisters that should not be pierced. Because they could become infected.

The second type is the most worrisome, and you should call a doctor as soon as possible.

When should I call a doctor?

Before calling a doctor, make sure it is not a first degree burn, but if it is a second degree burn, consult immediately.

In addition, if your child has the following symptoms:

- Fever
- Vomiting
- Blistering
- Dehydration see our article : Recognizing and preventing dehydration in children
